USACE National Levee Safety Program Focus Group Discussion
Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters and Galveston District are hosting a series of “National Levee Safety Program Focus Group Opportunities” with local levee sponsors throughout the nation and will be in Fort Bend County on Nov. 2nd, 2021. The stated purpose of the informal, interactive discussion is for them to learn more about what factors make people vulnerable to flooding in different communities. Information and insight gained from these meetings and discussions will be considered and included in the design of state/federal levee safety programs, highlighted in national best practices for levee and flood risk management, and considered in communication and support/training activities. These meetings will seek to understand factors and challenges levee owners and operators are having in operating and maintaining levees (e.g., cost, capability, information, and financial planning), and any other struggles that our NFS and communities are facing in terms of levee safety and levee management. The session will also focus on better understanding the unique challenges and faced by disadvantaged communities in relation to flooding.
