Don’t levees cause floods? / ¿Los diques causan inundaciones?

October 31, 2017

Levees are designed to reduce flood risk from flooding events; however, they do not eliminate the risk entirely. It is always possible that a flood will exceed the capacity of a levee, no matter how well the structure is built.

Levee systems are typically built along a waterway to provide protection from flood waters by acting as a barrier from the waterway, and by pumping water from the landward side back to the water side. There is a compromise that a levee system can slightly elevate levels on the water side through this process, particularly in exceptionally heavy rain events. However, levees have proven to be a critical tool for protecting flood-prone areas from flooding events in FBC.
